Irish Water is the national water utility of Ireland, responsible for ensuring all of its customers receive a safe and reliable supply of drinking water, and that their wastewater is properly collected and safely returned to the environment. Activ8 Solar Energies was appointed to design a bespoke solar panel system on its newest plant in Thurles, Ireland. Our experts worked in partnership with consulting engineers Glan Agua, who provide project solutions for the water and wastewater treatment industry in Ireland and the UK.
With offices in both England and Ireland, we were well-positioned to lend our specialist expertise and decades of experience to the project. We consulted with the Glan Agua team and worked from their technical drawings to devise a design for a 100kWp PV system, which uses 231 Hanwha 425w modules. We also handled both the installation and commission of this system, and facilitated the installation of a permanent fall arrest system to make future maintenance simpler and safer.
The system will produce 87,899 kWh per annum of clean electricity, saving Irish Water 52,739kg of carbon emissions annually, and providing a levelised cost of electricity of €0.04 /kWh.

The entire process was made easy by their team, who provided invaluable design guidance for the solution we required and an installation programme that integrated seamlessly with our contract requirement. Irish Water could save aroun 17 579,8 £ per year on electricity costs by using this solar system instead of purchasing electricity from the grid.
This system generates around 87,899 kWh/yr of electricity annually.
By using this system Irish Water can reduce emissions by approximately 52 tonnes (or 52,739 kg/yr) of CO2 per year.
