Boohoo PLC is a British online fashion retailer, and one of the most high-profile online retail giants in the UK. Having accumulated more than 15 years of history and growth to its name, the company recently conducted several in-depth reviews of its facilities and processes, with the ultimate view to finding new and more innovative ways to improve its sustainability, while making greater cuts to its carbon footprint. This led its team to approach our experts at Activ8 Solar Energies, enlisting our experience and expertise to help them revolutionise their business energy supply.
The Activ8 Solar Energies company was ultimately chosen to design, install and maintain a 2.7MW commercial solar PV system for Boohoo, which was installed at its distribution centre in Burnley. The project comprises a total of 5933 Hanwha Qcells Modules and SolarEdge inverters and optimisers. That makes it – to date – the single largest SolarEdge project ever carried out in the UK. It’s already begun saving Boohoo a staggering 592 tonnes of carbon in the first year of its completion; the equivalent of 27,231 trees being planted. The site became fully operational in September 2021. As part of the contract, £10,000 was also collectively donated by both companies to local charities and causes. At the outset of the project, David James, Supply Chain Director at Boohoo Group, said: “We all have a role to play in protecting our environment for future generations. This installation will help us to make our operations more sustainable, with the double benefit of reducing our impact on the environment and generating a significant cost saving at the same time.” Benedict Ennis, Business Development Manager of Activ8 Solar Energies stated “It’s a great project for us to win, considering that it’s right on our doorstep. Boohoo PLC could save around 344 250 £ per year on electricity costs by using this solar system instead of purchasing electricity from the grid.
This system generates around 2 295 000 kWh/yr of electricity annually.
By using this system Boohoo PLC can reduce emissions by approximately 592 tonnes of CO2 per year.
This system has a carbon impact equivalent to planting around 27,231 mature trees per year.
